14th Street and Broadway, downtown Oakland.

(Oakland, CA) Oakland in the Black is a holiday shopping and community festival on Black Friday to support local business profitability by helping downtown businesses stay in the black. By supporting our locally owned shops and restaurants we can make a difference.

Centered downtown, a wealth of stores, vendors, pop-up shops along with restaurants and local food vendors plus art, live performances, and a fantastic roster of local DJs and musicians will be participating in the festivities. We encourage all downtown businesses, and all local businesses throughout the city, to join in and host an event or activity.

We have all heard about the smashed windows at stores such as Oakollectiv, Tully's, Dryclean Time and art stolen from Refa Senay at the Cathedral Building. These downtown businesses have been significantly impacted, suffering decreased business and even theft and vandalism. They stood in solidarity during the general strike. Now it's time to support them. The Occupy movement is committed to ending the strangle hold big finance and those that act on their behalf have on our systems. These businesses are our friends, our neighbors, and the 99%. The best way to dismantle the corporate power structure is to create a sustainable local economy where we support each other and take back our community by walking our dollars into local stores.

We, along with other great community groups and other organizations such as Plaid Friday and many others, support the boycott of large corporations on Black Friday, traditionally the biggest shopping day of the year. The best alternative to camping out at Target or Best Buy is to come have some fun in the heart of our downtown.

Take back the holiday season, enjoy good food and music, be kind, be peaceful, shop for family and friends by spending our money where our hearts are with the wonderful folks who bring us joy and laughter. Come out and celebrate. Come out and hella love Oakland!

We are a small group of local residents, community members and shop owners, not an organization, volunteering our time and talents as a labor of love for our community.

Dear Artist,

Would you be willing to donate a piece of your artwork or an hour or two of your time to host an art demo to help raise money for arts education?

The Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy is organizing a Holiday Design Bazaar that will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2011 from 12-6 PM at the school, located at 4235 19th Street (one block up from Castro). The proceeds of this bazaar will go towards our developing visual and performing arts program. The event will have 30+ local vendors selling their handmade art-wares. In addition, we plan to host an ART AUCTION. We also want to have live ART DEMOS throughout the day celebrating what the arts is all about.

In 2010, this event grossed roughly $10,000 and with the donations received, we were able to partially fund the school's Visual Arts Program. We are raising money specifically to fund 10 art classes per year in each of our classrooms.

Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy is a small, public school located in the Castro District of San Francisco. Our mission is to empower student learning by teaching acceptance and non-violence, celebrating our diversity, achieving academic excellence, and fostering strong family-school-community connections. Our kids need art, and the San Francisco Unified School District has virtually eliminated arts funding. This is why we are asking you, our San Francisco art community, for your help. Young children are our investment. What we give them now sets the foundation for the future. We hope you will consider our request and take this opportunity to help fund an innovative, urban public school arts program.

We will feature gorgeous, hand-made crafts, yummy food, art auction, live art demos, childcare, a presentation on the value of arts education, and more! This is a beautiful event and a real community builder, plus a great opportunity to support our little school!

...This exhibition will resurrect and celebrate the spirit of a composer, activist, pioneer, revolutionary... Fela Kuti. Born Olu-Fela Anikulapo Kuti on October 15, 1938 in Abeokuta, Nigeria. Fela was one of Africa's most controversial musicians and throughout his life he continued to fight for the rights of the common man (and woman) despite vilification, harassment, and even imprisonment by the government of Nigeria. He formed his first group Koola Lobitos in 1963. The large jazz, funk, and afrobeat collective underwent many changes in the following decades but the style remained the same thanks to Fela's vision and other key members such as drummer Tony Allen.

Denise Wallace is a triple threat. The singer/dancer/poet is a tremendously talented and ambitious young woman who resides in Oakland, California. Since 2007 she has performed with the Hip-Hop group 40Love and their world-renowned live band The Park. As a dancer she has been a part of Axiom Dance Company as well as Bay Area dance company Funkanometry, with whom she has toured and competed in Hip-Hop festivals and dance events throughout California. Wallace has been able to unify poetry and performance as a means of social empowerment. Denise is currently a part of the poet mentor/high school visit program in Youth Speaks, a program that promotes social engagement through oral literacy in high schools and helps to apply the voice of change and social awareness at after school workshops for youth. Denise incorporates her art in the communities of the bay area as a form of activism. Denise is a Therapeutic Arts and Enrichment Specialist at the Edgewood Center where she works with foster children coming from emotional traumatic circumstances and uses literacy as a tool for their personal development.

Ashiko
Since honing her skills on the job, Ashiko has contributed percussion to the play Fredrick Douglas Speaks held at the Malonga Casquelourd Arts Center in Oakland, and backed up acclaimed singer and early civil rights activist Hope Foye at Yoshi’s in San Francisco.
Ashiko's CD: Soul Sistah For My Folks…The Journey Here evolved out of a poetry collection. Combined with deep grooves and hip-hop beats reminiscent of her own Djembe, Conga and hand drum work, Ashiko’s observational verses cover everything from finding the “real thing” to honoring her ancestry in the title track, to finding a sultry alternative to violence on “Black Love.” “Love is the answer, love is everywhere and available in the world,” she says, explaining the CD’s recurring theme. “If we can just claim a piece of it, our lives will change.”

The Brass Liberation Orchestra (founded in 2002) is a musical group of brass, reeds and percussion that plays music to support political causes with particular emphasis on peace, and racial and social justice. We are a work in progress. We work to build a multigender/multiracial/multigenerational group that enhances and strengthens the culture of the Left.

About the Event:

This event is called Bacchanal de Afrique will be taking place on Sunday July 26th 2009 (more info below), and will include a fashion showcase of clothing from one3snapshot. We will have live performers to add a festive spirit to this daytime and outdoor event. This is the first of many that we plan on producing.

Background of the Event:

We are friends, artists and community members who are collaborating for two main purposes:

1. To provide fun and creative events that are relatively cheap or free for attendees so as to draw in diverse backgrounds of people in the community.
2. To highlight a group or organization that is doing cultural and/or political work in the Bay Area.

Additionally we would like to bring awareness about social and community issues, raise money on behalf of good causes and especially have a fun time!
